Barns & Percheries
Birds kept in percheries or barns are kept indoors, but not in cages. Perches and laying nest boxes are provided.
A flock density of around 15 birds per square metre is common in the UK and is the optimum needed to maintain the ideal temperature of 21°C. Voluntary codes of practise introduced by the British Egg Industry Council, and the RSPCA's Freedom Foods implement these standards for both free-range and barn systems.
EU regulations permit 25 birds per square metre with 15cm length of perch per bird.
