Chickens |
Most of the chickens reared for meat in the UK
are housed in ventilated, enviromentally controlled
buildings. The floor is normally covered with
either chopped straw or clean wood-shavings. |
These houses are lit so that the birds can see
to move around. They are free to roam with food
and water constantly available. After about six
to seven weeks they are ready for slaughter. |
Before a new flock is placed, the house will be
cleaned and disinfected. One building will usually
house six to seven flocks a year. |
There are over 100 seperate pieces of the UK and
EU legislation applicable to poultry production,
including at least twelve on aspects of welfare. |
The welfare of the birds is always the farmers'
number one priority. There is no satisfaction
or financial reward in producing a bird that will
be rejected on grounds of damage or disease by
Government veterinary inspectors. |
