| Salmonella
- The NFU Welcomes Egg Report |
| The
NFU welcomes the report produced on the 10 May 2001
by the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety
of Food (ACMSF) which indicates a fall in the level
of salmonella in eggs. |
| The
report believes that these improvements flow from the
widespread vaccination of egg laying flocks against
salmonella enteritidies combined with improved flock
hygiene measures. |
|
NFU Deputy President Tim Bennett said: "This is
certainly a tremendous achievement by the British egg
industry and one which I hope will be fully publicised.
Not only are we beating salmonella but increased consumer
confidence means that egg sales are now also rising." |
| British
egg producers have voluntarily invested millions of
pounds in assurance schemes such as the Lion Code of
Practise which the report states has more than halved
the cases of salmonella in humans since the 1997 peak. |
